Nigerian singer, Simi, has condemned the circulation of a viral video showing Comfort Emmanson, a disruptive passenger, being forcibly removed from an Ibom Air flight, and has called for the punishment of the individual who filmed and posted the clip online without censoring the explicit parts.
The incident, which occurred recently on an Ibom Air flight, involved Emmanson allegedly assaulting crew members and refusing to comply with safety instructions.
The situation escalated to the point where airline staff had to physically remove her from the aircraft. However, the uproar that followed has been overshadowed by outrage over the video’s explicit content being made public.
In the footage, Emmanson’s bare chest was exposed during the altercation, and the video was uploaded on social media without blurring or editing the revealing scene. Simi stressed that while Emmanson’s alleged actions on the flight may warrant legal consequences, the person who recorded and shared the clip should also be held accountable.
“So let’s say the lady is actually mad and did too much… Someone recorded her being dragged off the plane, recorded her being exposed like that AND THEN POSTED IT without editing out this exposure or blurring it out. Lol,” Simi wrote.
The singer went further to question the public’s selective outrage, pointing out that both wrongs deserve condemnation.
“I personally wanna know who posted that video and why no one is holding him/her accountable. Because aunty will face the law, but voluntarily posting her half naked for millions of people to see when less than 10 people actually witnessed it in the first place deserves punishment too,” she stated.
Simi concluded her statement by stressing that there cannot be fairness if only one side of the wrongdoing is addressed. “Because you can’t condemn one madness and leave another one,” she added.
Her comments have sparked a wider debate on privacy rights, consent, and the ethics of sharing sensitive footage on social media.
Many Nigerians echoed her concerns, saying that such videos, especially those containing nudity, should never be posted publicly without the consent of the individual involved, regardless of the circumstances.
Ibom Air has yet to comment on the video leak, though it has maintained that safety and discipline on board remain top priorities. Meanwhile, rights advocates are calling for a review of Nigeria’s cybercrime and privacy laws to address the growing problem of non-consensual content being shared online.
Simi’s stance has drawn praise from several quarters, with supporters commending her for speaking against the violation of privacy and double standards in public discourse.
The incident continues to generate conversations across social media, with many urging authorities to identify and sanction the individual who posted the explicit video, alongside addressing Emmanson’s alleged misconduct on the flight.
