Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Natacha “Tacha” Akide, has opened up about her experience living abroad, revealing that she once paid as much as £5,000 (approximately ₦10.3 million) every month for rent during her stay in the United Kingdom.

The reality star shared this during a recent appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, where she discussed the realities of living overseas, her personal experiences, and the misconceptions people have about life abroad.

Tacha explained that while the idea of moving to the UK might seem glamorous, the reality can be financially and emotionally draining.

According to her, she lived in one of the most expensive neighbourhoods, and the cost of housing alone was staggering.

“Before you even know it, 30 days have passed, and it’s time to pay another £5,000,” she said. “People wanted me to move to the UK, and when I finally came, many of those same people were too busy with work to even see me. And I understood, because everyone is hustling here.”

She noted that many Nigerians abroad work multiple shifts just to keep up with bills, leaving them with little time for social visits or leisure. Tacha described the UK as a place where the cost of living is high, and people often have to make difficult sacrifices to survive.

The reality star also shared her observations about the harsh realities of poverty in developed countries. She recalled walking into stores like Tesco and encountering people lying on the floor, asking strangers for money  a sight that reminded her that financial struggles exist everywhere, even in wealthy nations.

Speaking further, she reflected on how life abroad can be isolating, especially without family support. “It’s such a hard place when you don’t have uncles, aunties, parents, or anyone who understands where you’re coming from because they also have their own struggles,” she said.

Tacha also touched on her personal challenges, referencing the criticism and name-calling she faced following her controversial disqualification from the BBNaija reality show in 2019. Despite the public scrutiny, she has continued to build her brand and remains a popular figure both in Nigeria and abroad.

Her comments have sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing shock at the rent figure, while others debated whether her lifestyle choice was excessive or simply a matter of personal preference.

Some social media users praised her transparency about the financial realities of living in the UK, while others questioned why she chose such an expensive area instead of seeking more affordable housing.

Regardless of the mixed opinions, Tacha’s revelation has fueled ongoing discussions about the true cost of living abroad, especially for Nigerians who aspire to relocate in search of better opportunities.

For many, her story serves as a reminder that while life overseas can offer certain benefits, it also comes with significant challenges  from high living expenses to emotional isolation  that are often overlooked in the pursuit of the “foreign dream.”
