Former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Čech has revealed that he and his wife, Martina, are ending their 26-year marriage.
The 43-year-old football icon shared the emotional news on Instagram, posting a black-and-white photograph of Martina kissing him on the cheek.
On his Instagram page on Thursday, Čech wrote:
“Martina and I are saddened to share that we are separating after 26 years together. We remain best friends and are incredibly proud of our two children.”
Čech and Martina first met as teenagers in 1999 and were married in 2003. Together, they are parents to 17-year-old daughter Adela and 16-year-old son Damian.
The goalkeeper is perhaps famously remembered for missing the birth of his daughter Adela in January 2008, as he was away with Chelsea for a League Cup semi-final against Everton — a match in which he did not ultimately play.
During his illustrious football career, Čech moved from Rennes to Chelsea in 2004 for £7 million. He went on to make 494 appearances for the club and collected multiple trophies, including four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, and the 2012 UEFA Champions League.
In 2015, he joined Arsenal, winning another FA Cup before retiring from professional football in 2019.
Since hanging up his gloves, Čech has pursued ice hockey as a goalkeeper and served as Chelsea’s technical and performance advisor until 2022, stepping down after Todd Boehly assumed ownership of the club.
