Bashir El-Rufai, son of the former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has weighed in on Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election landscape, asserting that Labour Party flagbearer Peter Obi is in a stronger position to challenge and potentially defeat incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu than former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In a social media post that quickly gained traction, Bashir El-Rufai described the presidential ambition of Atiku Abubakar as one that lacks genuine grassroots momentum and widespread appeal. According to El-Rufai, Nigerians are gradually shifting their political interest away from traditional power brokers and long-serving political elites like Atiku, a two-time presidential candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
El-Rufai noted that Peter Obi, who ran in the 2023 presidential election and finished third behind Tinubu and Atiku, has built a vibrant, youth-driven political movement that continues to grow in influence. He emphasized that Obi's appeal, especially among the youth, civil society groups, and educated middle class, puts him in a more competitive position in 2027.
The former Anambra State governor, known for his frugal governance and anti-corruption stance, has cultivated a reputation as a reformist and alternative to the status quo. El-Rufai acknowledged this shift in political sentiment, suggesting that the 2027 general election could be more unpredictable than previous polls, especially if Obi continues to consolidate support.
In contrast, he criticized Atiku Abubakar's repeated attempts at the presidency, labeling them as lacking innovation and failing to inspire the new generation of voters. He argued that Atiku's political brand has become stale, and his inability to unite the PDP and galvanize youthful support could be his undoing.
Political analysts believe that Nigeria’s 2027 elections will be shaped by issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, youth unemployment, and calls for governance reforms. With President Bola Tinubu facing significant criticism over fuel subsidy removal and inflation, the opposition could have a unique opportunity—if they present a unified and compelling candidate.
As the political temperature begins to rise ahead of 2027, Bashir El-Rufai's comments add fuel to ongoing debates about who can best unseat Tinubu. According to him, if any candidate stands a real chance, it’s Peter Obi—not Atiku Abubakar.
