Actress Lilian Afegbai has spoken candidly about the hurdles she encountered in her acting career, particularly the struggle to secure meaningful roles despite her talent.
In an interview with PulseNG, Afegbai revealed that even friends in the film industry frequently overlooked her abilities, often casting her as an extra rather than giving her substantial parts.
“People that I know, friends in the production industry, casting me as an extra and not an actor,” she said.
She further explained the difference between making a brief cameo appearance and being consistently sidelined.
“It’s different when you play a cameo in the film, but when it becomes a norm that your friends casting for a big production forget that you are an actor and when you remind them, they say you should come and play extra. They were comfortable with me playing extra,” Afegbai noted.
Her turning point came with her portrayal of Idia in the Netflix crime thriller To Kill a Monkey, directed by Kemi Adetiba. The role allowed Afegbai to fully demonstrate her range and depth as an actress, earning her widespread acclaim from audiences.
The series, which delves into cybercrime, betrayal, and survival, boasts a star-studded cast including Stella Damasus, Bucci Franklin, and Chidi Mokeme.
