Pastor William Kumuyi, the General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, has firmly stated that only God will determine the timing and identity of his successor.
Speaking during a recent Bible study session, the 83-year-old church leader sent a clear message to church members, warning against any attempts to pressure or influence him into appointing a successor prematurely.
Kumuyi emphasised that his leadership cannot be controlled or dictated by anyone, not even by his own wife. He made it clear that he remains fully active and committed to his pastoral duties despite his age, and that any call for a successor at this time is premature.
“The brother who taught the other Tuesday kept saying there is no leadership without a successor. He said it twice. I felt that was too much, more so since your father is still here. God will give a successor at His own time,” Kumuyi declared.
He warned members against challenging his authority or trying to “drive him away” from his position, stating, “You are not going to fight your shepherd, your pilot.
I reject any member of the church, whether you are a worker, choir member, or security person, who tries to control me. I won’t even take that from my wife because I am the head of the home… I stand where I stand and nobody will put me under pressure.”
Pastor Kumuyi also expressed his awareness of the pressure coming from some members who are eager for a transition in leadership. He suggested that such pressure may stem from a desire to see him step down, but he dismissed this as unnecessary.
“If God gives you a pastor that is still very active at this age, with a good voice running everywhere to preach the gospel, and you are asking for a successor, it makes me think you are tired of seeing me around. You don’t want to make me feel I’m imposing myself on you.”
Kumuyi reassured members that the right successor will be appointed in God’s perfect timing. “When the time comes, God will choose a man after His own heart. Don’t try to drive me away, even though I know you cannot.”
The statement reflects Kumuyi’s unwavering commitment to his spiritual calling and leadership role. It also serves as a reminder to church members that transitions in leadership within religious organizations are deeply spiritual decisions that must align with divine will rather than human pressure.
Deeper Life Bible Church, founded by Pastor Kumuyi in 1973, has grown into one of Nigeria’s largest and most influential Pentecostal ministries. Known for its strict adherence to biblical teachings and moral discipline, the church places great emphasis on pastoral authority and spiritual guidance.
Kumuyi’s leadership has been marked by decades of evangelism, teaching, and expansion of the church both in Nigeria and internationally.
His approach to leadership succession underscores a common principle in many religious organizations that God’s timing and choice take precedence over human impatience or political maneuvering.
In a time when many religious institutions face challenges related to leadership transitions, Kumuyi’s message encourages patience, respect for authority, and trust in divine providence. He reminds his followers that leadership is not merely a position to be contested but a sacred responsibility to be entrusted to the right person at the right time.
As the Deeper Life Bible Church community continues to grow, the question of succession remains important, but Pastor Kumuyi’s clear stance aims to quell premature speculation and unify the congregation around faith and spiritual readiness.
His leadership continues to inspire millions, and his call for patience and divine guidance in succession planning is a testament to his dedication and faith.
