A controversial statement from a Nigerian pastor has reignited fresh discussions around the tragic demise of rising Afrobeat star Mohbad. The pastor, who previously claimed to have foreseen the singer’s untimely passing, now asserts that “what really killed him was drugs — an excessive amount in his system,” reacting adversely to an injection administered following an injury.

Mohbad, born Ilerioluwa Aloba, passed away on September 12, 2023 at the age of 27 in Lagos, Nigeria . His death sent shockwaves across Nigeria, propelling a nationwide Justice for Mohbad movement led by devastated fans and public figures demanding clarity and accountability .

Following mounting pressure, Mohbad’s body was exhumed on September 21, 2023 for autopsy and toxicology testing, despite severe decomposition that compromised accurate results . The autopsy, conducted at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, revealed traces of the antihistamine diphenhydramine — though not at lethal levels — and highlighted the possibility of a fatal drug reaction or anaphylactic shock, owing to the absence of any major internal findings .

At the ensuing coroner’s inquest, the court ruled that Mohbad’s death was a result of medical negligence, attributing it to a severe reaction to an injection administered by an unlicensed auxiliary nurse. The court clarified that there was no sign of foul play, and no direct link was established between the death and Mohbad’s former promoter, Naira Marley, or his associate, Sam Larry .

Adding further medical insight, forensic pathologist Uwom Eze later testified that while regulated antihistamine levels were present — dismissing theories of illicit drug abuse — the singer may have succumbed to a severe allergic reaction (“hypersensitivity") to the injection, describing the incident as a "medical misadventure” .

Nevertheless, the pathologist underscored that the exact cause remained inconclusive due to postmortem decomposition, although the reaction to the injection remains the most plausible explanation .

Now, the pastor’s claims are shifting public curiosity from scandalous speculation toward medical realities. By attributing the cause of death to “drugs” and a harmful reaction to the injection, his statement overlaps partially with the medical inquest findings — particularly regarding a fatal drug reaction — even though official reports highlight no proof of excessive or illicit substances.

As the Justice for Mohbad movement continues, the pressing questions remain: Was there negligence in allowing an unlicensed nurse to administer injections? Were proper medical protocols ignored? And could proper care have saved Mohbad’s life?

With public outcry still boiling and institutional trust hanging in the balance, this new claim by the pastor does more than stir conversation — it forces a renewed look at accountability, healthcare standards, and the enduring quest for closure in the tragic saga of Mohbad’s death.
