The President of the Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Uche Agbo, has praised the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) for its continued efforts to combat digital piracy, particularly in the case against MovieBox, a notorious online piracy platform.
Agbo’s commendation followed the recent suspension of MovieBox’s domain (movieboxdotng) by the NCC, in collaboration with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), on July 20, 2025. The enforcement action was triggered by the platform’s persistent use of clone and mirror domains to evade regulatory sanctions.
However, Agbo strongly criticized the operators of MovieBox for quickly relocating their operations to a new domain (movieboxdotph), describing the move as a deliberate attempt to dodge accountability and continue exploiting Nigeria’s creative industries.
In a statement made available to the media, Agbo voiced his deep concern over the trend of “domain hopping,” which he described as a dangerous loophole that emboldens piracy networks.
“Shifting domains is a clear attempt to sidestep accountability while exploiting filmmakers, musicians, and content creators,” Agbo said.
He further warned that piracy not only threatens the livelihoods of creatives but also exposes users to serious risks such as malware infections, identity theft, and online fraud.
Agbo urged the NCC, NiRA, domain registries, internet service providers, telecom operators, and payment platforms to intensify their collaboration in blocking and deactivating the new domain and all other mirror sites used by MovieBox.
He also appealed to global rights enforcement bodies and intellectual property associations to support the NCC’s STOP campaign and extend the crackdown on piracy beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Reaffirming the DGN’s full backing for the NCC’s anti-piracy mandate, Agbo pledged continued cooperation to dismantle piracy networks and ensure sustainable protection for Nigeria’s creative content.
“Nigeria must remain resolute in protecting creative content. Domain hopping cannot become a shield for piracy. We stand firm with the NCC in ensuring that these illegal operations are shut down for good,” the statement read.
