Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has dismissed the possibility of success for a proposed Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi presidential ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics on August 3, 2025, Keyamo argued that the demographic dynamics that propelled Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election are no longer intact and would not support an alliance where Obi is not the leading candidate.

“They are going nowhere in terms of demography,” Keyamo said about the opposition’s potential alliance. “I like what is happening; they are putting us on our toes; it is going to make us work harder, but the numbers are not looking good for them.”

According to Keyamo, the ADC’s alleged plan to unite Obi and Atiku in a joint ticket to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 is fundamentally flawed. He maintained that the over eight million votes secured by the APC in the last election cannot be overcome by simply merging opposition forces.

“This so-called ADC, in 2027, what they are working on is to bring Peter Obi and Atiku (Abubakar) together to join those numbers and beat our over eight million votes. Let me tell you why it is wrong. If you make Peter Obi the deputy to Atiku, three demographic factors delivered Peter Obi in 2023, but the three will collapse,” Keyamo stated.

The minister outlined the factors that contributed to Obi’s popularity in 2023, noting that they are unlikely to play out the same way in 2027:

“The other candidates were Muslims, and so there was only one Christian candidate, and the Christians went to one candidate. The South-East felt cheated, so the South-East went to one point because of the Igbo man.”

“And the third demography: the Obidients, young Nigerians who felt they were angry, they wanted a younger person and all of that because the other candidates were older than him (Obi),” he explained.

Keyamo emphasized that even if Obi runs for president in 2027, he would struggle to gain traction in the northern region, which remains a stronghold for the APC.

“If you put Peter Obi this time as president, he cannot penetrate the north. We have our structures in the north. We have governors and our structures in the north,” he asserted.

The comments from Keyamo reinforce the APC’s confidence in its political machinery and demographic advantage, particularly in northern Nigeria, heading into the next general election.

As political alliances continue to form and strategies evolve ahead of 2027, debates around the viability of a Peter Obi-Atiku Abubakar ticket remain at the forefront of Nigeria’s political discourse.
