Anambra State is in shock after the brutal killing of a young, enterprising fish seller popularly known as Fish Magnet. Despite his unwavering hustle and job creation through fish selling, this promising entrepreneur was kidnapped and ultimately killed. The news has stirred outrage and grief across Nigeria.
Social media buzz reveals that Fish Magnet—real name reportedly Ifesinachi Onyekere or Martins—was a driven fish marketer, earning admiration by supplying quality fish at affordable prices in Onitsha. Known for creating jobs through his aquaculture business, he earned the affectionate title Fish Magnet. Posts from fans describe him as a beacon of hard work and integrity.
According to eyewitness accounts in Okpuno near Awka, the young seller was ambushed around 10:30 p.m. by heavily armed gunmen who stormed into his compound, shot him in the leg, and abducted him in his navy blue Toyota Corolla. The attackers fled via bush paths towards Nawfia, evading security forces .
In a tearful Instagram video, activist VeryDarkMan mourned the loss, revealing that Fish Magnet had intended to gift him smoked fish as a token of appreciation for his support to traders in Onitsha. Tragically, that heartfelt gesture never materialized. VeryDarkMan shared the final video message from the vendor:
“It would bring me more joy to give these fish to VeryDarkMan than to sell them… help me tag him so I can get these fish across.”
“Big brother, please, it will be an honor to send this fish across to you. It’s already in the oven.”
The incident has reignited demands for urgent action on rising insecurity in Anambra State. VeryDarkMan directly challenged Governor Charles Soludo, questioning the safety of citizens:
“If this country wasn’t safe, you wouldn’t send your kids abroad… What hope do hardworking entrepreneurs have?”
Plans are underway for a candlelight vigil on August 4 to honor Fish Magnet’s memory and highlight the escalating kidnapping crisis in southeastern Nigeria .
As online tributes pour in—with many remembering him as a young man creating jobs through genuine hustle—his tragic death underscores the devastating cost of insecurity on hopeful Nigerian entrepreneurs.
