A year has passed since the world lost one of Nigeria’s most beloved music icons, Onyeka Onwenu. Marking the first anniversary of her death, her family has paid tribute to her life, legacy, and lasting impact.
On July 30, 2024, the legendary singer collapsed shortly after performing at Stella Okolie’s 80th birthday celebration in Lagos. She was quickly rushed to Reddington Hospital but sadly did not survive. Her sudden passing sent shockwaves across the country.
In a heartfelt message, her son honoured her memory with a brief tribute.
“A year ago, today.
RIP mom
July 30, 2024.”
Onyeka Onwenu was more than a singer — she was a national treasure. Often referred to as the “Elegant Stallion,” she rose to fame in the 1980s with hits like One Love, Iyogogo, and You and I. Her music blended Afrobeat, Highlife, and gospel, earning her respect across generations.
Beyond music, she was a celebrated actress, television presenter, and former Executive Director at the National Centre for Women Development. She also served on various national committees and used her platform to advocate for women’s rights, youth empowerment, and social change.
One year later, Onyeka Onwenu’s voice may be silent, but her influence and contributions continue to inspire.
