Popular Nigerian singer Terry G has set the record straight regarding his appearances at political events, saying his presence at such gatherings should not be mistaken for political endorsement.

The artist, whose real name is Gabriel Oche Amanyi, made this clarification while speaking on The Real Shareholders podcast. According to him, he’s simply doing his job as an entertainer and remains unaffiliated with any political party.

“As an artist, we are usually billed to perform. In the current economy, if you’re opportuned to even get a gig from a political party, you’re lucky. So, respect to the party,” he said.

“But as a musician, I’m just doing my job. I’m an independent artist. I only went to political events to perform. At least, fans should have judged me based on what I said there, but they are now judging me based on what I did.”

Terry G expressed frustration over being singled out for criticism when other musicians do the same without facing similar backlash.

“No, you don’t need to judge me for that. If I had said people should vote for APC, that’s a different thing. I went to do my job just like my other colleagues. I don’t know why mine is different,” he added.

The comments come months after he faced heat online for performing at the pre-inauguration concert of President Bola Tinubu in May 2023 at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

Following the show, Terry G later called out the All Progressives Congress (APC) in November, claiming he was not paid his performance fee and that the money had been hijacked by intermediaries.

Despite the backlash, the singer insists his focus remains on his craft, not politics.
