The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed on, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday, marking a solemn end to his short-lived reign as the 43rd Olubadan.
According to reliable sources, the respected monarch died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025. His passing comes less than a year after his coronation as Olubadan of the ancient city.
Oba Olakulehin was officially installed on July 12, 2024, when he received the staff of office from Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde. Despite the brevity of his rule, his time on the throne was a symbol of tradition, stability, and reverence for Ibadan’s cultural heritage.
Born on July 5, 1935, the late king had a storied journey through the Ibadan traditional council, rising through the ranks over several decades before eventually ascending the throne.
His death has cast a shadow over the city, with Ibadan now in mourning. Tributes are expected from royal institutions, political figures, and indigenes across the country who held the monarch in high esteem.
The Ibadan Traditional Council is expected to announce burial plans and mourning guidelines in the days ahead.
