Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep concern over the current state of the country under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that Nigeria is in "bondage" due to escalating insecurity, worsening economic hardship, and ethnic-based leadership. Obasanjo made these remarks on Friday, July 19, 2025, during a meeting with southern leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
While addressing the delegation, which visited him as part of consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, Obasanjo did not hold back in his criticism of the current administration. According to The Guardian, the elder statesman said:
“We are in bondage. Let us keep watching the situation, but more importantly, let us pray that God delivers us.”
Obasanjo, who has often been vocal about national issues, made it clear that he is no longer involved in partisan politics, reaffirming his commitment solely to Nigeria’s progress and unity.
“I belong to no party. Nigeria is my political party. I only care about the country’s progress,” he stated.
The former president went on to lament the country's ethnic-driven political structure, which he believes has continued to hinder true national development. In his view, Nigeria has yet to produce a president who serves the interest of all Nigerians, regardless of tribe or region.
“We have had Fulani Nigerian presidents, Hausa Nigerian presidents, Yoruba Nigerian presidents… but we’ve yet to have a true Nigerian president, one for all, not just their tribe. Until we do, our problems will remain,” Obasanjo declared.
He further warned that passivity among citizens could worsen the situation, as it would allow selfish and unqualified individuals to dominate Nigeria's leadership. He called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and engaged in the political process.
“Nigeria is in desperate need of a truly nationalistic leader—someone who will rise above ethnic and religious sentiments to unite the country and lead it on the path of genuine progress,” Obasanjo added.
Obasanjo’s comments come amid growing public frustration with the Tinubu administration, which is facing mounting criticism over rising poverty, inflation, fuel subsidy removal, and increasing insecurity across the country.
