Veteran Nollywood actress, Chinyere Wilfred, has offered a heartfelt reflection on the evolving state of modern parenting and the rising instability in marriages, attributing both to the growing influence of Gen Z culture and a deviation from traditional family values.

In a recent interview with The Nation, the actress, known for her powerful on-screen presence and over three decades of successful marriage, opened up about how societal shifts are affecting family life.

Wilfred pointed out that younger parents and couples are increasingly influenced by trends, social media, and modern ideologies that often clash with the discipline and commitment that defined relationships in earlier generations.

“Parents of this generation are Gen Z parents,” she said. “Back in our days, parents would not do most of the things we see today. Look at what is happening to marriages now – you buy Aso Ebi and before you know it, they are divorced. We were not like that before. I’ve been married for over 30 years and I’m still happily married.”

Wilfred revealed that her role in the ongoing TV series Sands of Time served as a mirror to her own parenting style. While acting, she didn't realize the parallels between her character and real life. However, during playback, she recognized her own flaws in handling her children, particularly her son.

“While shooting, I saw myself in that character. I realized I was overreacting with my children. During the act, I did not notice it, but while I re-watched it, I saw my faults,” she recounted.

The experience became a turning point. “When I got home, I became calm with my son. Even now, despite he is a graduate, he still can’t sleep out. I thought I was protecting them, but I was overprotecting them.”

Wilfred’s comments echo a broader conversation among Nigerian parents and celebrities who have observed a spike in marital breakdowns, especially among public figures.

Social media has made the pressure to present a perfect life stronger than ever, with some couples opting for aesthetics over substance. According to Wilfred, this culture of fast weddings and faster divorces is worrying.

She advised young couples to stop glorifying trends and focus instead on commitment, mutual respect, and the long haul. Her insights, drawn from both personal experience and roles she's portrayed, offer a valuable perspective in an industry and society where glamour sometimes overshadows grounded values.

The seasoned actress, who has raised her children under firm yet loving guidance, emphasized the need for balance  to protect, but not control; to guide, but not dictate. Her reflections serve as both a personal confession and a call to re-evaluate how modern families are structured.

Wilfred’s message is clear: stability at home starts with intentional parenting and a deeper understanding of what truly holds a marriage together  not trends, but timeless values.
