Popular Lagos socialite and nightlife entrepreneur, Abu Abel, has been arrested by operatives of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Alagbon, over his alleged involvement in a staggering N447 million land fraud scandal. The arrest was made on Saturday, July 27, 2025, following weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering.

Abel, well known in elite Lagos social circles, was reportedly apprehended at a residence in Victoria Island, where he had allegedly gone into hiding to evade law enforcement officers. His arrest was executed by a tactical team led by CSP Taiwo Oyewole, acting under the orders of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Margaret Ochalla.

The arrest came after a petition was filed by Doyin Investment Group of Companies, accusing Abel of fraudulent conduct in the sale of three plots of land. According to the company, Abel claimed ownership of Plots 1, 4, and 10 located on Augustina Orji Street, Ojomu Chieftaincy Family Land, in Mayegun area of Eti-Osa Local Government, Lagos.

The plots, measuring about 1,800 square metres, were allegedly sold to the company in 2023 for N447 million.

A Deed of Assignment was reportedly signed to finalize the land transaction, but the company later discovered that the land in question was already encumbered and involved in third-party disputes. When confronted, Abel is said to have admitted he was aware of the dispute and agreed to refund the money.

He allegedly returned N230 million but defaulted on the outstanding N217 million. In a written undertaking dated January 11, 2024, Abel pledged to refund the balance or forfeit a property located at Block C, Plot 22, Oba Amusa Adebambo Avenue, Lekki.

However, rather than complete the payment, he allegedly became evasive and even issued threats to officials of Doyin Investment.

In a further twist, Abel reportedly filed a fundamental human rights suit, which police authorities believe was a calculated attempt to obstruct justice and delay the repayment process. This legal move raised suspicions and prompted a more aggressive investigation by the FCID.

After tracking his movements and securing intelligence, the police finally arrested Abel at his hideout. He is currently being held for questioning and may face criminal charges in the coming days.

The case has sparked wide reactions on social media, where Nigerians are calling for a thorough investigation and prosecution. Some commenters expressed shock, while others claimed such high-profile fraud cases are rarely prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Abu Abel, who has previously been linked to several controversies, now faces what could be a major turning point in his public life and business dealings. Many are watching closely to see how the police will handle the case, particularly as it involves large sums of money, real estate fraud, and alleged intimidation tactics.

As of now, the FCID has not released an official statement regarding his bail or the next legal steps. More updates are expected as investigations continue.
