Israel Afeare, popularly known as Israel DMW and well known as the logistics manager to Nigerian singer Davido, has taken a swipe at Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Edo State governorship election, following his loss at the Supreme Court.

Ighodalo, who had contested the outcome of the September 2023 governorship poll, suffered a major setback after Nigeria's highest court dismissed his appeal against the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo. The court delivered its ruling on Thursday, July 10, 2025, and concluded that Ighodalo’s petition lacked sufficient merit to overturn the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration of Okpebholo as the duly elected governor.

Reacting to the court’s judgment, Israel DMW took to his Instagram story to express his opinion, sharing a photo of Ighodalo receiving anointing from a clergyman. In a pointed remark aimed at the defeated candidate, Israel captioned the image with the words, “Anointing doesn’t win elections in Nigeria.”

The statement appears to mock Ighodalo’s reliance on spiritual backing during his campaign and post-election legal battle. It also underscores Israel’s strong political stance, which he has not shied away from expressing publicly in recent months.

Earlier this year, Israel openly criticized Governor Okpebholo’s leadership, calling for his resignation just weeks into his administration. According to Israel, since Okpebholo took office, Edo State has not experienced peace. He accused the governor of being involved in what he described as a “pure robbery” of the people’s mandate.

He also made spiritual claims regarding the current state of the leadership, asserting that ancestral forces were displeased with Okpebholo’s emergence. In his words, “The ancestors are angry with him over the pure robbery in the state.” He went further to demand that the governor relinquish his seat and hand over the reins of power to Asue Ighodalo, who he believed was the rightful choice of the people.

“The state hasn’t had peace since he took over,” Israel said at the time, doubling down on his belief that Ighodalo received the majority of votes from the people of Edo State and should be installed as the legitimate leader.

Despite Israel’s strong support and repeated claims, the Supreme Court’s ruling has put to rest any legal dispute surrounding the 2023 governorship election in Edo State. The court's decision not only upholds Okpebholo’s victory but also signals the end of the legal road for Ighodalo and the PDP regarding the election.

The court’s judgment is seen by many political observers as a significant victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC), to which Governor Okpebholo belongs. While some supporters of Ighodalo have expressed disappointment over the ruling, others, like Israel DMW, have turned to social media to express their frustrations or satisfaction, depending on their political leaning.

Israel’s latest jab at Ighodalo has stirred mixed reactions online, with some users applauding his boldness and others accusing him of being insensitive, especially given the religious undertone of the post. Nonetheless, his comment, “Anointing doesn’t win elections in Nigeria,” has continued to circulate widely on social media, reflecting the highly polarized nature of political discourse in the country.
