Nigerian global music star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about the mental and emotional challenges that come with his career, despite coming from a wealthy background.
The Afrobeats singer, who recently performed at a sold-out concert at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada, shared heartfelt reflections in a post-show interview with music executive, Bankulli, on Saturday night, July 27, 2025.
Davido, widely admired for his work ethic and consistent musical output, made a candid confession that has stirred conversations among fans and industry watchers. He revealed that although he was born into affluence, with access to "billions of dollars," he regrets pushing himself so hard due to the toll it has taken on his mental health.
“I regret to myself for being hardworking,” Davido said. “The stress and mental ability that goes into this type of work, especially with a lot of odds against me, is draining me. But I have to do it.”
The ‘Feel’ hitmaker clarified that his motivation is not about financial gain, but rather a deep passion for his craft and a desire to give back to his fans. “It’s not for the money,” he added. “I have billions of dollars waiting for me. Even if I don’t work again in my life, I have billions of dollars. But I’m working because I love my job and my fans.”
Davido is the son of billionaire businessman and philanthropist Adedeji Adeleke, and he has never hidden his privileged background. In fact, he embraced it early in his music career, branding himself as “Omo Baba Olowo” (Yoruba for “Son of a Rich Man”). But despite the glitz, his latest confession underscores the heavy burden that fame and success can carry—even for someone born with every advantage.
His statement comes just weeks after he wrapped up the North American leg of his Timeless Tour, which saw massive turnouts and sold-out venues in cities like New York, Houston, Los Angeles, and now Toronto.
Fans lauded his high-energy performances and humility throughout the tour, with many unaware of the internal battles the singer was fighting.
Reacting to his emotional confession, many fans on social media praised the singer for being vulnerable about the challenges that come with being in the spotlight.
“People think money solves everything,” one X user wrote. “But what Davido is saying is that no amount of money can replace peace of mind. Mental health is real.”
Another user tweeted, “Davido is one of the most hardworking artistes out of Africa. It’s okay to feel tired. He deserves rest.”
This isn’t the first time Davido has spoken about the darker side of fame. He has previously opened up about grief, particularly following the tragic death of his son Ifeanyi in 2022, and the pressure that comes with constantly needing to stay on top in a competitive industry.
Davido’s openness is being hailed as a wake-up call to many young people who idolize celebrities without understanding the pressure and personal sacrifices behind the scenes.
While fans continue to stream his hits and await new projects, many are now urging the superstar to prioritize his mental and emotional well-being. Some even suggested that the singer should take a break, if necessary.
As the Afrobeats genre continues to soar on the global stage, with Davido as one of its leading lights, his story reminds the world that beneath the glamour and wealth, there are still human emotions, struggles, and battles that even the richest cannot escape.
In a world that often glorifies hustle culture, Davido’s words serve as a reminder that passion without peace can be a heavy price to pay.
