Renowned Nollywood actress Lanre Adesina Hassan, popularly known as Iya Awero, has shared emotional details about her troubled marriage and her decision not to remarry.
In a recent interview on Behind the Fame – African List, the legendary Yoruba actress reflected on how her love life took a dark turn after marriage. According to her, while her late husband initially supported her acting career during their courtship, his attitude changed completely after they got married.
“Our love story is a little powerful. Because when we were still dating, he was very happy that he allowed me to act. He even came to watch me at rehearsals,” Iya Awero revealed.
However, she noted that things took a negative turn after marriage. Her husband, who once admired her passion for performing arts, suddenly became abusive and unsupportive.
“But, after we got married, he didn’t agree anymore. So sometimes, when I go to act and come home, he would beat me, saying didn’t he warn me not to act,” she said.
The iconic actress also disclosed that the marriage was short-lived, as her husband passed away at a young age. Despite the turbulent relationship, his untimely death brought the union to an early end.
“Though we didn’t get to enjoy the marriage for long because he died young,” she added.
When asked about the possibility of remarrying, Iya Awero firmly ruled it out, expressing concerns about the uncertainties of entering another marriage.
“If you say you want to remarry, do you know what you’ll meet where you’re going?” she said, emphasizing her decision to remain single.
Iya Awero remains a respected figure in the Nigerian film industry, particularly in Yoruba Nollywood, with a career spanning decades. Her story sheds light on the silent struggles many days.
