Grammy award-winning Afrobeats star, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has revealed that starting a family may not be on the cards for him anytime soon.
The singer, who has achieved global recognition through relentless touring and chart-topping records, made the disclosure during a recent interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra in London.
At 34, Burna Boy stands as one of the most influential African artists on the world stage. However, when asked if he plans to start a family soon, the self-proclaimed “African Giant” admitted that settling down doesn’t fit into his current lifestyle.
“Yeah, but I don’t want to start that on the road. I’m not planning on quitting tours anytime soon, so I don’t know where to now put that starting a family; find a middle ground,” Burna said.
The singer’s response reflects the difficulty many entertainers face when trying to balance personal life with a demanding career. For Burna Boy, who is constantly on tour across continents, the idea of beginning a family life while on the move is neither ideal nor practical.
His comment, “I don’t want to start that on the road,” underlines his desire for stability and commitment before taking such a major step.
He also revealed that one of the reasons he doesn’t go on vacations is because he doesn’t have children. Since launching his music career over a decade ago, Burna Boy has hardly taken a break, attributing his lack of holidays to the absence of a family that would prompt him to pause.
“I haven’t gone on a holiday since I started my career,” he said, indirectly emphasizing how his work takes top priority in his life.
Burna Boy's remarks come amid increasing curiosity from fans about his personal life, especially regarding marriage and fatherhood.
In the past, he has been romantically linked with British-Jamaican rapper Stefflon Don, but their relationship reportedly ended in 2022. Since then, the singer has largely kept his private life away from the public eye.
While many celebrities often speak about their desire to have children early, Burna Boy’s candour paints a picture of someone deeply committed to his art. His career trajectory from Like to Party to his Grammy-winning album Twice As Tall has been defined by constant evolution, experimentation, and global outreach. Starting a family, it seems, is something he wants to do deliberately, not as an afterthought squeezed between tour stops.
His comments have sparked mixed reactions online. While some fans admire his honesty and prioritization of career growth, others believe that family life should be pursued regardless of a busy schedule. Nevertheless, Burna Boy appears to be focused on his music and legacy for now.
In a world where celebrities often succumb to pressure to conform to societal timelines, Burna Boy’s admission is a reminder that personal milestones like starting a family should be determined by individual readiness and lifestyle.
For now, the African Giant is still on the move, chasing stages, awards, and chart history, with family life somewhere further down the road.
