Sean “Diddy” Combs was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges by a federal jury in New York but was found guilty on two lesser counts related to prostitution. The verdict was announced on Wednesday, July 2, ending a trial that has drawn intense public attention over several months.
The court convicted Combs of two counts of transporting individuals for prostitution. If Judge Arun Subramanian decides to impose the maximum sentences consecutively, the Bad Boy Records founder could face up to 20 years in prison.
Until a ruling on bond is made, Combs remains in custody, with the judge expected to decide by 1 p.m.
Combs avoided the most severe charges, which could have resulted in life imprisonment. The outcome provides partial relief for the hip-hop mogul, whose reputation has been deeply affected by the allegations, though his legal battles are far from over.
During the high-profile trial, which began in May, prosecutors called 34 witnesses over 29 days. One notable testimony came from Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, Combs’ former partner of more than ten years. Speaking while heavily pregnant, Ventura recounted disturbing details of alleged abuse and described what she called “Freak Offs”—planned sex encounters involving male sex workers.
Prosecutors argued Ventura was coerced into participating, while Combs’ defense team countered that the encounters were consensual, presenting text messages and other evidence to support their case.
Although Combs escaped a life sentence, he still faces numerous civil suits connected to sexual misconduct allegations.
Wednesday’s split verdict marks a significant legal win for the music icon, who has visibly aged during his months in custody awaiting trial.
