Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late colleague, Tom Njemanze, whose passing has left a void in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Known for his unique expressions and commanding presence on screen, Agu expressed deep sorrow over the death of Njemanze, calling it a huge loss to Nollywood and the nation at large.
Speaking during a condolence visit and in a brief statement posted on social media, Chiwetalu Agu described Njemanze as a “brother in the struggle” and a “pillar of the old Nollywood.”
He recalled their years working together in films, especially in the 1990s and early 2000s, when the industry was still in its formative stages. According to Agu, Tom Njemanze was one of the actors who laid the foundation upon which modern Nollywood thrives today.
“Tom was not just a colleague; he was a brother, a comrade in the theatre movement that became what the world now calls Nollywood. He was a true professional, a calm spirit with an undeniable passion for the craft. His death is not just a personal loss, but a national one,” Chiwetalu Agu said.
The late Tom Njemanze was widely known for his deep voice, serious expressions, and commanding acting style. Though not as frequently in the limelight in recent years, he remained respected within the industry for his contributions and mentorship to younger actors.
Njemanze reportedly passed away after a brief illness. His death comes as another blow to Nollywood, which has lost several notable stars in recent years, including Saint Obi, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, and Murphy Afolabi.
Fans and colleagues have also taken to social media to mourn Njemanze, with many sharing clips from some of his most memorable movie scenes and praising his versatility and legacy. Tributes have poured in from all corners of the industry, from veterans to rising stars, each acknowledging how much of a pioneer Njemanze was.
“Actors like Tom Njemanze may not trend on social media daily, but their work speaks volumes,” Agu added. “We must celebrate our legends while they’re alive and honour them when they pass.”
Njemanze's death has reignited conversations around the welfare of veteran actors in Nigeria, with many calling for better structures and support systems to ensure those who built the industry are not forgotten or left struggling in their later years.
As the film community continues to mourn, plans for Njemanze’s funeral are reportedly underway, with family and colleagues expected to release an official statement soon.
Tom Njemanze may be gone, but his impact on Nollywood will continue to resonate. His legacy as one of the pillars of the Nigerian movie industry is assured, and his work will be remembered by generations to come.
