Ric Hassani has offered a different perspective on why many gospel musicians shift into secular music, emphasizing that the decision often stems from a search for purpose and expression not financial gain.

According to the singer, making gospel music goes beyond having a good voice; it requires a divine calling to deliver spiritual messages through music, something not every artist is gifted to do.

Speaking in an interview with Hip TV, Hassani recalled how his musical journey started in the church but gradually evolved as he realized that the traditional gospel path wasn’t his true calling. “Gospel is not just music; it’s ministry,” he said, explaining that not everyone is blessed to channel the Holy Spirit through melodies in the way legends like CeCe Winans or Whitney Houston have done.

Hassani noted that the decision to make secular music doesn’t mean one is less spiritual or driven by material goals.

He revealed that he includes at least one Christian-themed song in each of his albums, showing his faith remains an essential part of his identity, even though his musical expression leans toward secular sounds.

He dismissed the assumption that gospel-to-secular transitions are financially motivated. “Even some of the richest artists like Davido or Burna Boy continue to make music, not because they need the money, but because of the fulfilment that comes with creating,” he explained.

According to Hassani, the deeper reward lies in being able to transform ideas into music that resonates with people, which often surpasses any financial reward.

He believes everyone has their unique place in the creative space, and for some, that place is outside the church, making music that still carries meaning and impact.
