Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has voiced her strong disapproval following the circulation of a viral video featuring a woman’s revealing outfit at the wedding of her younger colleague, Ruby Ojiakor.
In the video, a guest at the ceremony wore a daring low-cut dress that prominently displayed her chest, sparking conversations online. Responding to the footage, Edochie expressed deep concern over what she described as a troubling decline in moral values and modesty, particularly at sacred events like weddings.
The actress emphasized that white weddings are symbolic of "cleanliness, godliness, and purity," yet many attendees now appear at such events dressed inappropriately. She questioned the long-term influence of such choices, especially on children who are likely to encounter these images on social media.
“What will your children say seeing this on social media?” Edochie asked pointedly.
She lamented that her ongoing efforts to highlight the dangers of indecent dressing are often dismissed, even though recent incidents are beginning to justify her warnings. According to her, the normalization of such fashion choices reflects a deeper erosion of societal values.
“This disturbing trend has reached alarming proportions, with many individuals embracing indecent dressing as a norm. The consequences of this behaviour are far-reaching, contributing to a decline in moral values and respect for oneself and others,” she said.
Edochie, who is the sister-in-law of legendary actor Pete Edochie, did not hold back in her criticism, stating that she would not hesitate to react strongly to anyone appearing indecently dressed in her presence.
“Look, it is better to leave your house stacked naked to go wherever you’re going; at least the world will know you’re very pretty and mad at the same time. Being half-baked won’t sell you out properly; just become completely naked, na that one better. After all, if Adam and Eve could be naked, why can’t you?” she remarked sarcastically.
She further questioned the appropriateness of mothers dressing in such ways, saying, “A mother of 4 to 5 be naked too? Mothers.”
Calling for collective responsibility, Edochie stressed the need to promote modesty and decency in public spaces.
“It is essential that we address this issue collectively, promoting a culture of decency, modesty and respect. We must recognise the impact of our choices on individuals and society as a whole and take responsibility for fostering a more positive and uplifting environment,” she urged.
Concluding her message with a new month’s greeting, she advised her fans to reflect on their choices and dress appropriately.
“Happy new month and Happy Sunday, great lovers of Rita Edochie. This is a new month; have a rethink, and dress decently.”
She also issued a stern warning: “Ask people who know me if you see me anywhere dressed like a pornographic actor. The reaction I will give you, you know now. It would even be better if you didn’t come my way at all. I have zero tolerance for indecency.”
