"The Moment Bimbo Ademoye Realized She Was More Than Just a 'Curvy Girl'"

When Bimbo Ademoye first entered the film industry, attention was often focused more on her physical appearance than her talent.

"People were more focused on my looks," she recalled. "It was all, ‘Have you seen that new curvy girl?’ because I had a small waist and wide hips." That perception frequently led to her being cast in roles that revolved around her appearance. “That image led to me constantly being cast as the woman who snatched someone’s husband or was dating someone’s boyfriend,” she added.

A turning point came when she was on set with producer Uduak Isong, who recognized a different side of her.

“Uduak Isong said, ‘You’re actually really funny, and people haven’t seen that side of you,’” Ademoye said. That observation led to the creation of the film Backup Wife, which showcased her comedic talent. Following that performance, the tone of her career shifted. “Out of every 100 scripts I received, 90 were comedy roles — everyone just wanted me to come and make people laugh,” she noted.

Her career took another turn in 2021 when acclaimed filmmaker Kunle Afolayan approached her for a more dramatic role.

“Kunle Afolayan reached out and said, ‘I want you to play a role in Anikulapo,’ and I did,” she said. That opportunity opened the door to a broader range of characters. “Since then, I’ve been getting more diverse roles, with people asking me to play more serious characters like that.”
