Nollywood actress Debbie Shokoya has shared an emotional account of betrayal she experienced from those she once considered close friends.
Speaking with fellow actress Bimpe Akintunde on the podcast Iriri Mi, Debbie recounted how some of her friends spread damaging rumours, alleging that her husband used "jazz" (a form of charm or spiritual manipulation) to marry her. These same individuals, she revealed, went as far as claiming she had been hypnotised.
Reflecting on the situation, Debbie said she has now come to terms with the loss of those friendships and has chosen to embrace peace and surrender. According to her, her husband has become her closest companion, and she draws strength from him, their child, her own family, and her in-laws.
“Those I called my people… the same ones who said I was hypnotised—were my friends. People I trusted. But today, I realise I have no one left. And you know what? I surrender,” she said.
Shokoya added that she now sees a divine purpose behind the fallout, believing God intentionally removed those individuals from her life to save her from setbacks and a possibly unfulfilled future.
“Looking back now, I see clearly—God took those people out of my life for a reason. If they were still here, maybe my life wouldn’t have meaning. Maybe they would’ve caused setbacks… maybe they would’ve sent me packing from my marriage,” she reflected.
“But God stepped in and cleared the path. And I’m thankful,” she added.
As she stepped into the new year, Debbie said she made a conscious decision to relinquish control and place her trust in God. That decision, she believes, has brought peace and purpose to her life.
Debbie’s story adds to the growing conversation around toxic friendships, especially within the entertainment industry.
