Eid al-Adha, known locally as Sallah, is a time of joy, reflection, and community for Muslims around the world. But for worshippers at a recent prayer ground, the sacred morning took an unexpected turn when a Sallah cow, intended for sacrifice, broke free from its rope and charged through the crowd, sending worshippers scrambling for safety.
The incident unfolded just as prayers were about to begin. The atmosphere, filled with anticipation and devotion, quickly shifted to one of alarm as the large animal, clearly frightened by the noise and crowds, managed to slip its tether. Witnesses described a scene of confusion as the cow barreled through the gathering, worshippers dodging in every direction to avoid being trampled.
For many, the experience was both frightening and surreal. “One moment, we were standing shoulder to shoulder in prayer; the next, people were running and shouting. It was very scary,” recounted a worshipper who narrowly avoided the animal’s path. Such moments remind us of the vulnerability that can arise even during the most peaceful religious observances.
