Nollywood Movie Review: The Party (2025)

Sure! Here's a refined version of your sentence: "Nollywood Movie Review: The Party (2025)"

One of the newest Nollywood offerings on Netflix, The Party, is a mini-series that steps into the crime and investigation genre with a star-studded cast. While the series had a few compelling moments, it was a mixed bag overall.

The acting is the strongest component.

Without a doubt, one of the movie's strongest points was the performances.  The majority of the actors made their parts realistic and emotionally compelling, drawing the audience into the drama.  The actress who was chosen to play the lead detective was an exception, though.  In the setting of a crime drama, her character was hard to relate to or take seriously because of her overly theatrical and stiff performance.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES

In my opinion, Kehinde Bankole gave the most captivating performance; she effortlessly and presence-commanded every scene she was in.  Ayoola Ayoola also made an impression by giving his role complexity and depth.

 Sections that become flat

 1. The Father's Reaction to Misfortune

The father's response to his son's passing was a pivotal emotional moment.  Regretfully, it was not sincere.  The scene would have been more impactful with a more nuanced and genuine depiction of grief, but he didn't need to be broken dramatically.  Does anyone else see this?

2. Kunle Remi's backstory

Kunle Remi's character "Bobo" had a subplot about a tenant who somehow held significant family secrets.   But there was no explanation or backstory for why this tenant knew so much or was so eager to share the information.   It felt too convenient and was poorly constructed.

3. The Eye Cosmetics of Shaffy Bello

Shaffy Bello, a skilled and expressive actress, effectively portrayed suffering and loss.  The excessive redness beneath her eyes, though, was superfluous and detracted from her otherwise superb performance.  Instead of overpowering her expression, the makeup ought to have complemented it.

 4. More Effective as a Feature Movie

The format of the three episodes felt strained.  It would have been easy to condense the plot into a single, well-paced two-hour film.  More length than content was added by the episodic format.

5. Weak and Nonsensical Investigative Work

The absence of credible investigative detail was a significant disappointment.  We saw no real procedural steps—no fingerprint collection, no in-depth questioning of important characters who had obvious ties to the victim—despite passing references to forensics.  And the plot twist in which the detective used thumb rubbing to determine the murderer?  That logical jump seemed sloppy and unsupportable for a purported crime thriller.

 6. Untidy Secret Information

The series is full of dramatic secrets and plot twists, but the way they were revealed felt abrupt and uncomfortable.   Instead of building tension, these revelations often came across as rushed and unimpressive.

 The Last Shot

The Party excels in a number of technical and artistic domains.

Excellent performance by important cast members

 Amazing editing and cinematography

Sprinkles of well-placed humor, particularly among the male characters

However, the flaws are just as notable:

A shallow plot structure

Underwhelming storytelling

A crime-solving arc that lacks realism

I’d give it a 6.5 out of 10. It’s worth checking out if you enjoy strong performances and high production quality. But if you’re looking for a tightly written mystery or satisfying investigation, this might leave you wanting more.
