Fitness coach and entrepreneur Maje Ayida has shared emotional details about his silent struggle with depression following his divorce from media personality Toke Makinwa.
Speaking during a recent testimony at a UK church now trending across social platforms Ayida said the fallout from their broken marriage left him in a dark and isolated space.
According to Ayida, the intense media scrutiny surrounding the divorce triggered a deep sense of shame and self-blame. He admitted to withdrawing from public life, shutting down his business activities, and grappling with insomnia, paranoia, and a heavy loss of self-worth.
“It was a public divorce, and that alone made me feel very alone. I didn’t want to go out. I lost motivation to work, and even getting out of bed became difficult,” he revealed.
The former husband of the On Becoming author said he battled emotional instability for nearly a year before deciding to confront his situation head-on.
He embarked on personal research about overcoming mental health challenges, and what helped him start healing was taking full responsibility for his actions.
“I realised accountability was a major key. I had to take the blame, which initially made me feel worse, but it led to healing,” he noted.
Maje and Toke got married in 2014, but the union ended two years later amid allegations of infidelity. In 2017, Ayida sued Makinwa for defamation over claims made in her book. By 2020, a Lagos court ruled in his favour, awarding damages.
Now, years later, Ayida’s reflection on his past reveals a man who has not only faced personal trials but also emerged with a deeper understanding of self and healing.
