Nigerian rapper Illbliss has raised alarm over the harsh realities faced by young people across the country, criticising societal norms that, according to him, enable irresponsibility and celebrate mediocrity.

Speaking during a recent episode of The Real Shareholders podcast, the hip-hop veteran reflected on how modern cultural trends are affecting the mindset and choices of today’s youth.

“This generation celebrates not just mediocrity but also lack of decision. Everything is ‘cool.’ So, under the cool theory people are allowed to overdose on drugs, they are allowed to live their lives the way they want to. They are allowed to not work and be entitled. So, there are so many things that are going on with young people these days,” he stated.

Illbliss went on to narrate a troubling encounter where a young man admitted to engaging in internet fraud to afford medication for his mother battling cancer. He said the situation reflects the mental exhaustion many young Nigerians are experiencing due to financial pressure and societal disillusionment.

“Someone was telling that he has to do fraud because salary can’t buy his cancer patient mother’s drug. So, young people are mentally defeated. They are tired. They are just doing whatever they can to keep their lives going,” he added.

The rapper’s comments have stirred conversation online, with many echoing his sentiments on the growing struggles faced by Nigeria’s youth in a challenging economy and rapidly shifting social landscape.
