Controversial Nigerian singer, Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has claimed that his boldness and public persona paved the way for other Nigerian artists to confidently smoke cannabis on screen.

The self-acclaimed “Akpako Master” made this assertion via a statement on Sunday, Terry G wrote was quoted saying, “No hard feelings, it’s all love, but no forget say if no be my sacrifice, none of your fav go get liver to smoke Igbo for screen.”

According to him, before his rise to fame, most Nigerian artists were afraid to be seen openly engaging in such acts, especially on camera. He believes his fearless character and rebellious image helped normalize certain behaviors that were once considered taboo in the mainstream entertainment scene.

The “Free Madness” crooner has always been known for his eccentric lifestyle, both on and off the stage. His music, fashion, and public behavior have drawn both praise and criticism over the years, with some crediting him as a culture shifter in Nigerian pop music.

However, Terry G’s recent claim has sparked a mix of reactions. Many social media users were quick to refute his statement, pointing out that legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was smoking cannabis on screen and in public decades before Terry G’s emergence. Others argued that Terry G contributed significantly to a new era of musical freedom, even if he wasn't the first to challenge norms.

Regardless of the controversy, Terry G’s comments have once again reignited conversations about authenticity, influence, and the boundaries of artistic expression in the Nigerian music industry.
