Popular Nigerian comedian, Woli Arole, has stirred reactions on social media after openly criticizing university fellowship leaders, commonly referred to as "Papas" and "Mamas", for what he describes as manipulative and exploitative behavior.
In a recent post shared on his official Instagram page, Arole alleged that some of these leaders demand food items, referred to as “first fruits,” from fellow students under the guise of spiritual leadership.
According to him, this practice is not only unnecessary but also reflects a growing trend of abuse of authority within religious student fellowships on Nigerian campuses. “You’re collecting foodstuffs as ‘first fruit’ from your fellow student that is struggling like you? Are you God?” he questioned in his post.
His comments have since gone viral, sparking a wave of reactions online. Many Nigerians, particularly those who passed through university fellowships, echoed similar sentiments in the comment section, recounting their own experiences with overzealous fellowship leaders.
While some users supported Arole's boldness, others criticized him for publicly calling out religious institutions, suggesting he could have passed the message more respectfully.
This is not the first time the comedian has used his platform to address issues related to religion and youth culture. Known for his faith-based comedy, Arole often mixes satire with reality, targeting societal practices he believes are toxic or outdated.
Just recently, he sparked another conversation when he said, “Demons don’t respect condoms,” a line meant to warn against premarital sex masked as harmless fun.
Arole’s latest post has once again put a spotlight on campus fellowships and the unchecked powers sometimes wielded by student leaders in the name of God. It remains to be seen whether religious organizations on campuses will publicly respond or implement reforms following this viral criticism.
