Nigerian singer Anthony Ebuka Victor, popularly known as Victony, has opened up about how a tragic car accident in 2021 became the turning point in gaining his parents’ full support for his music career.
Speaking on the Behind The Prestige podcast, the Soweto crooner revealed that his parents initially wanted him to pursue a more traditional path completing his education and becoming an engineer. According to him, while they didn’t outright forbid him from doing music, they were never truly supportive at the beginning.
“My parents were not cool with me doing music from the jump. They didn’t tell me to stop, but they weren’t 100% supportive of it,” Victony said. “They hoped I’d finish school and become an engineer.”
That perspective, however, changed drastically after his near-fatal car crash in April 2021. The accident claimed one life and left three others, including Victony, severely injured. The public outpouring of love and prayers that followed the incident deeply moved his parents.
“But when I had my accident in 2021 and they saw how much impact I had on people, how people on social media were posting things like ‘pray for Victony,’ they realised my music career meant a lot to me and just let me do what I wanted,” he shared.
Victony is currently signed to Mainland Block Party, a label run by music executive Tobi Mohammed. Since rising to fame with his 2021 collaboration with Mayorkun on Holy Father, he has grown into one of Nigeria’s most unique voices in Afrobeats.
Reflecting on his journey, the singer described the accident as a “blessing in disguise,” despite undergoing four surgeries and still dealing with health complications.
