Two months after Nigerian boxer Segun Olanrewaju tragically lost his life during a boxing match in Ghana, his widow, Busola Olanrewaju, is still pleading for the return of his body.
The boxer reportedly suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in the ring, yet his remains are still being held in Ghana, leaving his family in prolonged grief and distress.
In an emotional video that has since gone viral, Busola expressed frustration over the unending wait and lack of clarity from authorities in both Nigeria and Ghana.
She revealed that every effort to retrieve her husband's body has been met with promises that have yet to materialize. "All I hear is ‘very soon’ but how long more must we wait?" she asked, her voice filled with pain.
Busola, now a single mother of two young children, also lamented the growing difficulty of catering to her family in her husband’s absence. Although her parents have stepped in to assist financially, she noted that the delay is not only emotionally draining but also stalling her ability to move forward.
The incident has sparked wider concern about safety standards and emergency medical response protocols during sporting events, especially in countries like Ghana and Nigeria where such tragedies have occurred without clear accountability.
Despite numerous calls for action, officials have yet to provide a concrete reason for the continued hold on the late boxer's remains.
The Olanrewaju family is now appealing to both governments to intervene and help bring Segun home so he can be given a proper burial.
As support continues to pour in from the Nigerian boxing community and beyond, many hope that swift diplomatic steps will be taken to ease the pain of a grieving family longing for closure.
