Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has revealed that God once issued him a chilling warning that his first son would die if he ever left the church.
Adeboye shared this deeply personal experience during the June 2025 edition of the Holy Ghost Service, held at the Redemption City in Ogun State in the early hours of Saturday. The service, themed “Destined for Greatness (Part 2),” focused on divine guidance and staying spiritually rooted.
Addressing a troubling trend among young Christians who drift between churches without commitment, Pastor Adeboye warned against treating spiritual direction like a personal experiment. He expressed concern that many believers lack the discipline to remain where God has planted them.
Recalling his early Christian journey, Adeboye said he faced temptation to join more prominent ministries after he became born again, but God gave him a stern instruction.
“There were big names back then, ministries that were booming,” he said. “But God told me, ‘Son, this is where you must remain. The day you leave, your firstborn will die.’”
At the time, RCCG was still relatively unknown and headquartered in a modest structure in Ebute-Metta, Lagos. Adeboye, then a university lecturer, said he obeyed God's instruction to serve under a leader with no formal education, which he found humbling.
“I was a university lecturer. My spiritual father hadn’t even attended primary school,” he recounted.
He urged young Christians not to chase trends but to stay where God has placed them. “It’s not about which church is more famous,” he said, “but where God wants you to be.”
Adeboye emphasized that his message was not a comparison of denominations, but a lesson on divine obedience.
