Nigerian media personality and actress Chinonso Arubayi has shared an emotional reflection on the personal journey of grieving the loss of her husband, gospel artist Eric Arubayi, who passed away in 2017.
In a heartfelt message, Chinonso revealed the emotional toll of being judged for how she expressed her pain. “After I lóst my husband, I felt misunderstood… jûdged. People expected me to cry a certain way, at a certain time,” she shared. “But I’ve always been the type to smile in public and cry in private.”
Her decision to grieve privately, she said, was often misinterpreted. “They called me héartless. Evîl. But I wasn’t. I was just grîeving—my way.”
Chinonso emphasized that grief doesn’t follow a set pattern, and what she truly needed during that time was compassion, not criticism. “I didn’t need jûdgment. I needed understanding. Grîef is messy. Silent sometimes. Deeply personal. And that’s okay.”
Ending her tribute with a tender message to her late husband, she wrote, “Keep résting well, hubby. You will forever be in my heart. The world might not know the pâin I felt after lósing you, but I want you to know—things have never been the same.”
Chinonso’s message serves as a powerful reminder that grief looks different for everyone—and that honoring those we’ve lost should never come with societal expectations.
