Nigerian highlife legend Bright Chimezie has entered into a groundbreaking publishing deal with Sony Music Publishing, a partnership set to preserve his iconic Zigima Sound and extend its reach to audiences around the world.
Chimezie, renowned for his energetic performances and for originating the Zigima genre — a vibrant blend of highlife, Afrobeat, and traditional rhythms — has long been a cultural force in Nigerian music. The new deal positions Sony Music Publishing to manage his rich musical catalog, ensuring his timeless works remain accessible to both longtime fans and new generations.
The company will oversee the curation and promotion of Chimezie’s songs and recordings, aligning with its broader mission to amplify African musical heritage through strategic global partnerships.
Commenting on the collaboration, Godwin Tom, Managing Director of Sony Music Publishing Nigeria, stated:

In his response, Bright Chimezie emphasized the deeper cultural significance of the agreement, saying:
“This is a necessary step to help preserve our traditional and cultural heritage for generations unborn. I’ve always believed in the power of my music to unite and inspire, and I’m thrilled to work with a global partner like Sony Music Publishing to take Zigima to the world.”
The deal reflects Sony Music Publishing’s continued investment in African talent and its commitment to preserving legacy catalogs while introducing indigenous sounds to a broader international platform.
