The remains of Nigerian professional boxer Segun Olanrewaju, fondly known as "Success," are set to arrive in Nigeria next week after weeks of diplomatic and legal delays following his tragic death in Ghana.
Olanrewaju died on March 29, 2025, after collapsing in the ring during a fight against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at the Trust Sports Emporium in Accra. His death, confirmed at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, triggered nationwide grief and renewed concerns about safety protocols in African boxing.
Efforts to return his body to Nigeria had stalled due to the need to fulfill Ghana's legal and coroner procedures. However, a coroner's report has now been completed, paving the way for repatriation.
President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, Rafiu Ladipo, confirmed the development and expressed appreciation for the cooperation between Nigerian and Ghanaian officials. He assured the public that the late boxer would be returned to Nigeria in the coming days, although no exact date was provided.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the boxer's death revealed troubling findings. A Ghanaian committee discovered that Olanrewaju had an undiagnosed heart condition, but also highlighted failures in medical oversight during the fight. Shockingly, the committee noted that there was no certified doctor at ringside, and the individual posing as medical staff lacked qualifications.
The investigative panel has called for reforms in Ghana's boxing governance and recommended that the Ghanaian authorities cover all repatriation and burial expenses.
As Nigeria prepares to receive Olanrewaju’s body, there is rising demand for improved athlete welfare and cross-border accountability in African sports, ensuring that tragedies like this do not recur.
