Nigerian singer Bella Shmurda has highlighted the financial challenges many artists face due to excessive spending on luxury items like jewelry and cars.
Speaking on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, he explained that such lavish expenses often prevent artists from funding their projects independently, forcing them to rely on record label advances.
Reflecting on his early career, Bella Shmurda admitted he made similar costly mistakes but has since learned to embrace simplicity. He emphasized that an artist’s image doesn’t have to be tied to material possessions; good grooming, dressing well, and personal hygiene can create a strong brand without the need for expensive accessories.
He warned that the obsession with luxury drives young artists to take advances from companies, which can lead to debt and loss of creative control as labels hold onto their music catalogues for years. Bella Shmurda advocates for better financial education and responsible spending habits within the industry to ensure artists remain financially independent and sustainable.
“I don’t think packaging has to be materialistic. Having good clothes on you, looking nice, nice skin, brushing your teeth, smelling well is okay, if you know how to dress without chains,” he said. “It’s because of the too much emphasis on expensive packaging that our young artists now run towards advances and they end up being indebted to those companies… I made that mistake too but I learnt. And I feel like we just have to educate ourselves about these things.”
