Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Elozonam Ogbolu, is sparking important conversations around masculinity and societal expectations in Nigeria. Speaking on the In The Company Of Men podcast hosted by Ikhane Akhigbe, Elozonam dismissed long-standing cultural taboos that paint simple acts of affection or responsibility as signs of weakness in men.
According to him, Nigerian society has long conditioned men to avoid roles perceived as feminine like cooking, shopping for sanitary products, or engaging in certain forms of intimacy.
But Elozonam believes it’s time for a mindset shift. He argued that true masculinity is not about dominance or emotional detachment, but about showing up fully in relationships, even in roles traditionally assigned to women.
He stressed that men should not feel emasculated for pleasing their partners whether that’s through intimacy or everyday support like cooking and running errands. “Being vulnerable or serving your woman doesn’t make you any less of a man,” he emphasized during the podcast.
Elozonam didn’t stop there. He also addressed how some women unknowingly reinforce toxic standards by romanticizing abusive or emotionally unavailable men. He noted that statements like “he doesn’t love you if he doesn’t beat you” reflect a dangerous societal problem, often rooted in traumatic upbringing or misguided beliefs about love.
The actor's blunt take challenges both genders to unlearn toxic ideals. His comments have drawn mixed reactions online but have also opened the door for a much-needed cultural dialogue about what it truly means to be a man in today’s Nigeria.
For Elozonam, redefining masculinity means embracing kindness, empathy, and responsibility and urging others to do the same.
