Reality TV star and entrepreneur Uriel Oputa has spoken out strongly against age-based insults, especially those directed at women.
In a passionate video message shared on Instagram, the former Big Brother Naija housemate addressed Nigerian men who mock women for aging, describing it as a shallow and offensive mindset.
“This is going to be pinpointed to Nigerian men. It is an insult to God to use age discrimination against a woman,” she stated.
Uriel expressed frustration over how her videos are sometimes met with comments about her age, rather than engagement with the message she’s trying to convey.
“So I posted a video and you are not coherent with what the video teaches you, what you get out of the video is ‘oh you’re getting older,’ because you’re not smart enough to digest and use the concept that was taught to you to better your life but what you hold on to is that you’re getting old,” she said.
She urged people to value life and recognise the blessing that comes with growing older.
“Think twice before insulting a woman because she is growing gracefully and beautifully, it is not an insult to age, it’s a blessing,” she added.
In her caption, Uriel reinforced her belief that aging should never be viewed negatively:
“There is no shame in aging, aging is a privilege. I’d rather grow old than be six feet under with regrets. Some people have all the money in the world and still wish they had one more day to breathe. Don’t mock what you cannot understand, one day life will remind you.”
Her message was clear: self-worth shouldn’t be measured by age, and women deserve respect regardless of the number on their birth certificate.
