Afrobeats megastar Davido has spoken openly about the criticism he faces in Nigeria, attributing much of the backlash to resentment over his wealthy background.
During a recent appearance on the Culture Knock Out podcast, the singer reflected on how public perception shifted once people discovered he came from a privileged home.
“I’m the biggest criticised artist in Nigeria. I mean, I’m on fire and I’ve been on fire for a while,” Davido said.
He explained that his early success shielded him from immediate judgment, as most fans were unaware of his father’s billionaire status when he first broke into the industry.
“In the beginning, they didn’t know that my dad was rich. So the stigma of a rich kid doing music didn’t end up as crazy as it should have been for me,” he said. “People didn’t know my father was rich. It was too late.”
Despite the backlash, Davido emphasized that his decision to pursue music came from a genuine love for the craft, not because of financial privilege.
“But I just wanted to do music. I didn’t care if I had to become homeless. At that point, that was all I wanted to do. Nothing would stop me,” he added.
The “Unavailable” hitmaker also pointed out how some fans eventually turned on him, not because of his music, but due to his background.
“Over time, people started hating me because my dad is rich. But I keep on dropping good music, and it keeps working out,” he said confidently.
He went on to compare his situation to that of public figures in leadership, noting how success often invites criticism.
“It happens to everyone, once you become the biggest in anything, you will get criticised. You are doing an election, people love you and they vote for you. But when you become president, they hate you,” he concluded.
Davido’s remarks highlight the complex relationship between fame, class, and public perception in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
