Celebrated Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been announced as the headliner for the inaugural edition of the Things Fall Apart Festival, a weeklong celebration honoring the literary legacy of Chinua Achebe.
Organised by Ncheta Ndigbo, the Enugu-based Centre for Memories, the festival is an evolution of the annual Things Fall Apart Day, now marking its fifth year. This expanded event will run from June 29 to July 5, 2025, at the Centre’s premises in Enugu.
This year’s theme, “Masculine, Feminine, Human: The Dialogue of Complements in Things Fall Apart,” will explore the gender dynamics and broader human themes in Achebe’s groundbreaking novel, which celebrates its 67th anniversary this year.
The announcement of Adichie’s participation was made via the Centre’s Instagram page on Tuesday, with the organisers expressing their excitement over her involvement.
“It’s Official! Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is Headlining the Things Fall Apart Festival 2025,” the post read.
“We are screaming with excitement because the iconic Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – globally celebrated novelist, feminist, and one of the most powerful literary voices of our time is coming home to headline the Things Fall Apart Festival 2025.”
The organisers noted that Adichie, who is currently promoting her latest book Dream Count on a global tour, will reflect on themes such as cultural identity, storytelling, and the lasting influence of Achebe’s work.
“Adichie will reflect on storytelling, cultural rootedness, and the timeless dialogue between history and identity. Her presence marks a powerful moment in our collective exploration of the festival’s theme,” the post added.
They described Achebe as “her greatest inspiration” and referred to the festival not just as a literary gathering, but as a cultural movement.
“This is more than a festival, it’s a homecoming, a celebration, a movement. Achebe lives. Our stories rise. And YOU need to be part of it.”
The festival’s lineup will include a range of events, including art exhibitions, traditional music and dance performances, film screenings, and an essay competition, all aimed at honoring Achebe’s enduring impact on African literature and cultural thought.
