Nigerian singer Portable has sparked fresh controversy after calling out the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) over what he describes as an intentional disregard for veteran actor Ibrahim Chatta.
The outspoken musician took to his Instagram page shortly after the 2025 AMVCA ceremony, expressing his disappointment that Chatta, who had been nominated in the Best Lead Actor category for his role in House of GAA, did not clinch the award.
The honour instead went to Femi Adebayo for Seven Doors, while Chioma Chukwuka walked away with the Best Lead Actress trophy.
In a fiery video, Portable alleged that certain powerful interests within the Nigerian entertainment industry are responsible for Chatta’s continued exclusion, likening the situation to his own experience with The Headies awards.
“There’s a clique in the industry, and if you’re not part of it, they shut you out,” he said. He further claimed that some accolades are influenced by wealth or status rather than genuine performance.
The singer stressed that awards should not define an artist’s value, declaring that talent and impact matter more than industry validation. “We don’t beg for awards. God sees everything and rewards in His own way,” he added, offering support and admiration for Chatta, whom he referred to as a mentor.
This is not the first time Chatta’s lack of recognition at major award shows has stirred reactions. In 2023, he hinted that he was being deliberately sidelined a statement that divided public opinion at the time.
With this latest outburst from Portable, questions around credibility, favoritism, and fairness in Nigeria’s award culture have been reignited. While AMVCA organizers are yet to respond, the debate continues to grow louder across social media platforms.
