Princess Opeyemi Bright has made history by becoming the youngest mayor in the United Kingdom at just 29 years old.
She was officially sworn in as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham on May 16, 2025. Her achievement not only marks a significant moment in British politics but also stands as a proud milestone for Nigerians living abroad and youth advocates worldwide.
Born to Nigerian parents in the UK, Opeyemi Bright credits her success to divine grace and a strong sense of purpose.
During her inauguration, she expressed deep pride in her heritage and pledged to serve her community with humility and dedication. She hopes her journey will inspire others, especially young people, to take up leadership roles and make positive contributions to society.
Opeyemi’s political career began at age 22 when she was elected as a local councillor. Over the past seven years, she has been actively involved in initiatives aimed at empowering youth, promoting social inclusion, and enhancing economic opportunities within her borough.
Her commitment to public service is influenced by her family background, with her mother, Dr. Afolasade Bright, having served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, and her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, being a respected senior minister.
Her groundbreaking appointment is being celebrated as a symbol of increasing Nigerian influence in global politics and highlights the importance of diversity and youth participation in leadership.
Princess Opeyemi Bright’s story is an inspiring example of how determination, heritage, and community spirit can combine to create meaningful change on an international stage.
