Nigerian singer and music producer Cobhams Asuquo has shared candid insights into his life as a blind artist, explaining how his blindness has shaped both his career and outlook on life.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, posted on YouTube Thursday, Cobhams encouraged people with disabilities to embrace their realities and find strength in their circumstances. He revealed that his blindness pushes him to work significantly harder than others. “Knowing I’m blind makes me put in five times the effort,” he said, highlighting common misconceptions about blindness.
He explained that society often assumes blind people are incapable, and this stereotype motivates him to prove otherwise. “Because there’s this stereotype that blind people can’t do much, I work hard to show I’m capable of so many things,” he added.
Cobhams also stressed the importance of facing one’s condition honestly rather than masking it with euphemisms or denial. He believes it’s okay to be sensitive but cautioned against living in denial by using softer terms. “It’s okay to be blind. The world has softened in some ways, which is fine, but you should acknowledge your situation clearly, call it what it is, and draw strength from it instead of hiding behind fancy names,” he stated.
Rejecting the term “visually impaired,” Cobhams explained that impairment implies partial weakness, whereas he is completely blind. “I’m not visually impaired—I have no sight at all. And that’s perfectly fine with me,” he said.
He also shared that he copes with his blindness through humor and acceptance. “Sometimes I use dark humor about it, and I’m totally comfortable with that. This is who I am, and I embrace it. It makes my achievements even more meaningful,” he remarked.
Through his openness, Cobhams Asuquo continues to inspire many, proving that blindness is not a limitation but a different way of experiencing and conquering life.
