A Ghanaian man has set his sights on making history with a Guinness World Record (GWR) attempt for the longest individual swimming marathon.

Identified as Dauda Seidu Bayigo, also known as Mansa Musa, he unveiled his ambitious plan in a recent TikTok video that has already attracted close to half a million views and over 30,000 likes.

Bayigo announced that his challenge will begin on June 6, with the goal of swimming from Ghana to the United States — a staggering distance of approximately 9,898 kilometers.

He appealed to the public and potential sponsors for support, urging them to back his bid to accomplish the monumental feat.

In a follow-up post, he shared clips of himself training in open waters, cheered on by a crowd of supporters. He also published a map showing his proposed route. However, it remains uncertain whether the Guinness World Records has officially endorsed the attempt.

If successful, Bayigo would surpass several existing world records in endurance swimming.

Among those is Spain’s Pablo Fernandez, who swam 250 kilometers (155.34 miles) between July 19 and 20, 2021, in Miami, Florida — the current GWR for longest ocean swim.

He would also outdo Tunisian swimmer Nejib Belhedi, who holds the record for the longest open sea swim duration, recognized by the World Open Water Swimming Association. Belhedi swam non-stop for 76 hours and 30 minutes between September 15 and 18, 2018, covering about 120 kilometers across the Gulf of Gabès from Sfax to Djerba.

Additionally, Bayigo’s planned swim would exceed Croatian swimmer Veljko Rogošić’s 2006 record, where he completed a 225-kilometre (139.8-mile) open sea swim across the Adriatic from Grado to Riccione, Italy.

The Ghanaian swimmer’s attempt, if verified, would set a new global benchmark for endurance and distance in open-water swimming.
