A Lagos High Court has sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging for the killing of 22-year-old Oluwabamise Ayanwola, a young fashion designer who went missing after boarding his bus in February 2022.
Delivering judgment at the court located at Tafawa Balewa Square, Justice Sherifat Sonaike ruled that Ominikoron was guilty of murder and attempted rape.
The court concluded that the prosecution had successfully established the case beyond reasonable doubt.
“In respect to the murder of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, the sentence is death by hanging. May God show you mercy,” the judge declared.
The heartbreaking case began when Bamise boarded a BRT bus in the Lekki area, only to be declared missing soon after.
Her lifeless body was found days later under suspicious circumstances on Carter Bridge, Lagos Island. The case triggered national outrage and demands for better security within the city’s public transport system.
During the proceedings, another woman testified that Ominikoron had assaulted her inside a BRT bus months earlier, in November 2021.
While the court couldn’t convict him for rape in Bamise’s case due to lack of direct evidence, it upheld an attempted rape charge based on consistent testimony and supporting details.
The ruling has been seen by many as a long-awaited step toward justice for Bamise and a call to action for improved safety for commuters across Lagos.
