Nigerian singer Ruger has opened up about a deeply emotional experience from his childhood that, according to him, played a significant role in shaping his attitude toward love and relationships.
In a recent conversation, the artist reflected on his first-ever heartbreak, which he said happened when he was just six years old. At the time, Ruger said he had formed a strong attachment to a much older female family friend who jokingly referred to him as her “boyfriend.” The young Ruger took the nickname seriously, believing he had a special bond with her
However, his innocent fantasy came crashing down the day he saw her with another man in an intimate situation. Recalling the incident, Ruger described it as a shocking moment that left him confused and heartbroken at such a young age. He admitted the experience traumatized him and triggered the beginning of what he called his “toxic era.”
As a way of expressing his pain, the singer revealed he turned to music, particularly the song “Imagine That” by Styl-Plus, which he sang repeatedly after the incident. That moment, he said, was his first real exposure to heartbreak and emotional betrayal.
Ruger went on to say that the pain of that incident lingered for years and influenced how he approached relationships later in life. He now finds it difficult to open up emotionally and blames that early experience for his struggles with vulnerability.
The singer’s candid revelation has sparked discussions online, with many praising him for speaking openly about emotional trauma and how early-life experiences can shape one's personality and relationships.
