Jamal Roberts has emerged as the champion of American Idol Season 23, securing a landmark victory in the show’s history.
The season, which began airing on March 2, 2025, featured celebrity judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood. Roberts triumphed over fellow top finalists John Foster and Breanna Nix during the grand finale, which aired on May 18 and was hosted by Ryan Seacrest.
A staggering 27 million votes were cast during the finale — the highest tally the series has seen in recent seasons.
As part of his winnings, Roberts will receive a recording contract with Hollywood Records, an initial signing bonus of $125,000, an additional $100,000 after completing his debut album, and access to a recording budget of up to $300,000.
His win is especially historic, as Roberts becomes only the second Black male to win American Idol in over two decades — the first being Ruben Studdard in Season 2.
A father of three, Roberts had also welcomed his youngest daughter just before the finale, making his victory all the more emotional and inspiring.
